Why Artists Should Be Using BeReal

Over the past few months, BeReal has risen to popularity across the globe. On its way up, the app has caused some major waves in the world of social media, for users and platforms alike.

What is BeReal?

For those of you unfamiliar with the new photo-sharing app, here's what you'll find in it's App Store description: "BeReal is the simplest photo sharing app to share once a day your real life in photo with friends. Everyday at a different time, everyone captures a photo within 2 minutes. Capture and post in time to discover what your Friends are up to.”

BeReal is focussed on sharing authentic photos, only allowing users to post filter-free images, shot within a certain time frame. It also uses a dual camera approach, shooting from your phone’s front and back camera simultaneously. The app has even shared its stance on influencers and mass followings, telling users “BeReal won't make you famous. If you want to become an influencer you can stay on TikTok and Instagram” and “BeReal doesn't care if you have millions of followers or if you're verified.”

Its Value for Artists

While the app might not become a huge driver for artist reach, it holds the potential to become a powerful tool for building intimate connections with fans.

Because BeReal posts are only visible to user’s friends for a limited amount of time, the app can be utilised for giveaways, sneak peaks, and any other content that artists might like to offer limited-time access to. In some instances, artists might be able to utilise the app to give fans a glimpse into life on tour or in the studio.

Unless users make their content visible on BeReal’s Discover tab, it can only be seen by their users who they’ve accepted a request from, or sent a request to. For artists, this presents an opportunity to create an exclusive community on the platform, likely populated by their most invested fans.

BeReal’s Influence so Far

You don’t have to look too far to see how BeReal’s has influenced the world of social media this year. In July, Instagram introduced the Dual feature, which allows users to shoot photos and videos for Stories and Reels through their front and back cameras simultaneously. In September, TikTok followed suit with TikTok Now, which sends users daily prompts to post. Unlike BeReal, TikTok Now offers some more flexibility around the content users can share, allowing them to choose photo or video posts.

Given the rising popularity of BeReal, it’s an app that artists, managers and labels should have their eyes on. It could pave the way to more meaningful and authentic fan engagement.
